The Origins of Uyo

Uyo is the State capital. The State has 31 Local Government Areas, 119 Clans and 2,664 Villages. It is bounded on the East by Rivers State, on the West by Cross River State, on the North by Abia State and the South by the Gulf of Guinea. It is the 10th largest State in Nigeria in terms of landmass.

Uyo's roots trace back to the Ibibio people, one of Nigeria's oldest ethnic groups. Historically, the area was a conglomeration of small villages and communities, each with its own leadership and traditions. These communities thrived on agriculture, fishing and trading, establishing Uyo as a nexus of economic activities in the region.

Uyo lies on the road from Oron to Ikot Ekpene. A collecting station for palm oil and kernels, it is also a local trade centre (yams, cassava, palm produce) for an area inhabited mainly by the Ibibio people. Uyo has about 76 villages on its own.

Before ascending to its current prominence, Uyo was a modest town overshadowed by larger neighbors like Calabar. The pivotal moment came on September 23, 1987, when Akwa Ibom State was carved out of Cross River State and Uyo was designated as its capital. Oron Museum:

A short drive from Uyo, the Oron Museum houses one of the oldest collections of wooden sculptures in Africa, offering insights into the rich artistic heritage of the region. It stands as a beacon of cultural preservation and education.
